China — Before You Go
Your Pre-Trip Checklist
Everything worth sorting before you leave home. Tick things off as you go — and print it out if that’s easier.
Apps & Connectivity
Download & set up AlipayHandles payments everywhere in China. Link your foreign card at home — easier on a stable connection. Didi is built right in so no separate app needed.
Download & set up WeChatEssential for scanning restaurant QR menus, ordering food, and paying. Has built-in English translation for menus.
Download Amap (高德地图)Google Maps has real gaps in China — local restaurants and side streets often missing. Use Amap to fill them. Download both.
Set up a VPN (optional but helpful)Lets you use any WiFi — hotel, café, or public — and still access apps like Google and Instagram. Install and test before you leave home. Without one, your eSIM data covers you.
Activate an international eSIMActivate before you land and your regular apps work normally. Works on its own if you don’t have a VPN.
Visa & Entry — 240-Hour Transit (TWV)
Confirm your country is eligibleCheck en.nia.gov.cn for the current list of eligible countries, permitted ports of entry, and any recent changes before booking.
Print your departing flight confirmationOfficers require proof you’re leaving China. Must be printed — don’t count on showing it on your phone screen.
Print your hotel booking for every stayOfficers want to see where you’re staying for the duration of your visit. Have printed copies ready.
Have proof of funds readyYou may be asked to demonstrate you can support yourself. Showing your credit card limit works.
Transport
Book high-speed train tickets in advancePopular routes sell out. You’ll need your passport number to book. Stations are large — treat them like airports and arrive early.
Pack in Your Day Bag — Every Day
Pocket tissuesToilet paper isn’t always available in public bathrooms. You can buy tissues in China easily, but good to have one pack in your bag from day one.
Hand sanitizerSoap isn’t always available either. Keep it in your bag alongside your tissues.
Always Verify Before You Travel
The 240-hour transit policy — eligible countries, permitted ports, and designated travel areas — has been updated several times. Check the latest requirements at en.nia.gov.cn before your trip.
